Two days later, Alex stood under a clear dome on the dark side of Yandol 2, the only non-rotating of the four innermost Yandol planets. After leaving the underground tunnels below the port on Yandol 7a, Qaas had smuggled Alex off of the planet and flown in a super-shielded vessel toward Yandol itself. She then learned about how, from its earliest days, the Axaron Rebellion had used Yandol 2 as a center of operations. Ships moving to and from the Axaron settlements were shielded specifically for the close approach to the star, and the times they could move at all were limited. Only when they were completely sure they would not be observed would they venture to move in to, or out of, the center of the Yandol system.

Alex stared upward through the dome, peering in the general direction of Lopez. Occasionally her eyes flicked toward the dot of light that she suspected was Yandol 7a, but each time she let her attention drift in that direction, her tears blurred her vision. After many long hours of talking to Qaas and Praglio, Alex had sworn into the Rebellion. She would visit her home in the Lopez system one more time, to collect the few belongings she could not bear to part with, and after that she would be in the service of the Rebellion. Had there been a chance to resume business, Alex would have purchased a ship and made the attempt. But less than a day after the final fate of the Sweet Journey, Qaas had informed her that her likeness was being distributed by the Co-Op as a criminal to be shot on sight. The message Qaas had received indicated that the authorities on Yandol 7a didn't know if Alex had survived the blast or not, but they wanted to make sure that she would never run a business again.

“This is a crazy universe,” Alex said to the stars. “But if anybody can make it better, we will do it. I will do it.”
